I am very pleased to announce the release of Jessica’s Mullen’s second work for the Genetic Music Project, Soundscape #2: Longevity. It’s a really beautiful piece, and the perfect compliment to Jessica’s first piece, Soundscape #1: Bitter. Take a moment to sit down with it and listen to song of the nucleotides.

The process for creating these two soundscapes (No. 1 & No. 2) is almost identical, and I describe my process in the first sounds-cape, based on the FASTA sequence for Bitter here. It’s interesting that the final products are very distinct.

Science In Heaven: Gillian Grassie’s Genetic Music on Harp

After a long break, I am thrilled to share the newest genetically-inspired music from harp super-star Gillian Grassie. She based her heavenly piece on the genetic sequence allegedly related to people’s ability to learn from their mistakes (I know, the research is speculative but the music is beautiful). And, on another note, let me know if you are interested in getting more involved with the Genetic Music Project. I am interested in opening the website up to become a resource for scientifically inspired art the world over.

Four Musical Mutations of ‘Restless Leg Syndrome’!

In a first for the Genetic Music Project, The Digital Poets have submitted FOUR different musical interpretations of a genetic sequence related to ‘restless legs syndrome.” The four pieces by the Atlanta, Georgia artists are a perfect tribute to the site’s larger theme of art through variation, mutation and evolution. Restless Genetic Mix V1

We began by creating three separate 16 note drum track measures made up of a 16 nucleotides each. “A” was assigned as the snare drum, “C” was assigned the cymbal parts, “G” was assigned to tom, drum and “T” was assigned to the kick drum. After establishing the drum track we added bass, guitar, and vocals using the same formula as the drum track. However, it is important to note that each instrument is composed of a separate three measure nucleotide sequence. The drums are made up of the first 48 nucleotides, the voice track uses the next 48 nucleotides, the bass uses the next 48 nucleotides following the vocal sequence, and the guitar track uses the 48 nucleotides following the bass sequence. After that we sweetened the sound with minimal sound effects as we mixed down the composition.

Peter comes to us from Thurso on the far North Coast of Scotland. And in a GeneticMusicProject.com first Peter even made his own ambiently awesome video of his piece “Mind of a Catfish.”
